Touchal Summit (Central Alborz)

Altitude: 3960m

Difficulty:

Best Time: Spring & Summer

Tour Length: One and a half day

Touchal and its surrounding is like an east-to-west ridge in the southern flank of central Alborz mountain ranges from north of Tehran. This mountain is bounded with the valley of Jajroud and Shahrestanak Rivers from its north and with a lower ridge to the northern summits of Karaj Mountains to its west.

Topography of the Region

Touchal, the highest northern altitude of Tehran, is linked to the Shahrestanak pass (3700m) from its west spur called Houmand (3900m) and then to Shahneshin summit (3850m). It is also connected to Darabad summits through Loupahneh pass from its east by a curved ridge after forming the two summits of Piazchal and Lezoun. Touchal summit is bounded with Ghezghounchal peak and the minor spurs of Ahar Bashm and Shahrestanak from its northern flank. This northern ridge connects Touchal to Dizin pass and then to other high altitudes of Alborz through Qale Dokhtar and Sichal summits.

Attractions

Imamzadeh Ebrahim, the famous 150m wall of Band-e Yakhchal, the rock-climbing area of Band-e Yakhchal, the twin waterfall and the big shelters of Shirpela, Kalak Chal and Palang Chal are among the attractions of this region. The route to Touchal is one of the old ways and is the place of arising mountaineering in Iran.

In Winter

Although this summit is near Tehran, it is very difficult to climb due to the unexpected heavy storms and we must have a complete mountaineering facilities and enough experience. Except on its spurs, the other places have the dangers of flushing avalanche. So we recommend climbing the mountain through its southern flank in Winter.

Itinerary

Day 1: Move toward Shir Pela shelter at 11 am (about 3 hours steep climbing) and stay there overnight.

Day 2: Clime to the summit (about 3 hours steep climbing till Amirieh shelter and 2 hours from there to the summit, totally 5 hours). Then return to the shelter and down the mountain.

P.S. 1. We can come down the summit by Tele-cabins, if they work.

       2. If the alpinists have high potential for climbing, we can finish this tour in only one day.
